Winter doesn’t have to be a drag of endless hours on the treadmill. It can be a season full of exciting new workouts to try!
Our friends at Greatist compiled a list of 20 indoor exercises to try this season.
- Spinning – these indoor cycling classes have developed a huge following thanks to boutique cycling studios like Soul Cycle. The classes can burn up to hundreds of calories and keeps bones strong.
- Swimming – indoor pools have the benefit of being, you know, inside. Swimming is a low-impact exercise that lets athletes exercise longer without excess muscle strain.
- Resistance training – body weight exercises, lifting, or using resistance bands can get your heart pumping and strengthen your muscles and bones. Related product: CanDo® Exercise Bands
- Rock climbing – there are plenty of indoor rock climbing gyms that are open all year. Plus, it is a great way to get a cardio workout in and it requires a lot of upper and lower body strength.
- Ice skating – skating tones the legs, core, and glutes along with smaller, stabilizing muscles that assist with balance and coordination. It’s also a lot of fun!
- Dancing – Zumba and Barre workouts have quickly become popular in the past few years. Zumba workouts are fun dance party-like cardio classes that feel more like a party than a workout. Barre combines elements of yoga, Pilates, and weight training to lengthen and tone muscles.
- Boot camp – boot camp workouts are inspired by military training and combine strength training with high-intensity cardio to deliver a full body workout.
- Boxing – boxing and heavy bag classes focus on cardio and conditioning to help increase a fighter’s stamina in the ring, which means you’ll tone muscles.
- Yoga – yoga has a lot of mental and physical benefits. If it’s especially cold outside, you can try hot yoga. Related product: CanDo® yoga mats.
- Tai chi – this is a low-impact exercise with its roots in ancient China. According to Chinese philosophy, it helps yin and yang, opposing forces that need to be kept in check. It has also been found to improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve balance.
- Pilates – Pilates are great if you’re getting an early start on your beach body. The moves are easily modified to fit any fitness level, are designed to condition the body, and improve balance.
- Trampoline parks – these indoor bouncy parks are becoming more popular by the day. Six minutes of cardio on the trampoline is the equivalent of running about a mile.
- Dodgeball – some of us dreaded this in high school, but dodgeball delivers a surprisingly good cardio workout. Check around your community for a local dodgeball league and join with a few friends.
- Plyometrics – plyometric workouts incorporate explosive movements like tuck jumps, jumping jacks, and single-leg hops to improve cardio endurance and strength.
- Basketball – playing basketball is another gym class throwback, but it has a lot of cardiovascular benefits. Plus, running up and down the court can improve your athletic endurance as well as balance and coordination.
- Soccer – indoor soccer fields are becoming increasingly popular. Soccer offers great cardio and some discreet core work.
- Kickboxing – kickboxing combines karate-style kicking with boxing punches for a full-body workout. Plus, if you ever get caught in a position where you need to defend yourself, the skills are easily transferable.
- Kettlebell swings – kettlebell swings are the perfect combination of strength training and a cardio workout. A study found that in one 20 minute workout, participants burned about 20 calories per minute. Related product: CanDo® vinyl-coated kettlebells
- Rowers – rowing machines are often found at the gym. Each rowing stroke offers a full-body workout and increases your heart rate. Rowing classes are also available and can burn up to 1,200 calories in one hour-long session.
- TRX – TRX uses your body weight to develop strength. The portable suspension trainer works the whole body, even the core. Exercises are easily modified depending on your fitness level. You can purchase your own TRX system. Many gyms have TRX classes which are a great way to get started.
