3 Steps to Get Back in the Game After an Ankle Injury

24-9103When an injury occurs at a sporting event, the situation can become tense. Decisions need to be made fast and they need to be the right decisions.  In this type of situation, an athletic trainer (AT) is under immense pressure to assess the severity of the situation and provide the proper treatment. His or her decision is what stands between an athlete continuing in a game, or exiting it.

If you are an AT assigned on a sport that has a high potential for ankle injuries (football, basketball, etc.) it is important to know how to effectively recognize and treat an ankle injury. Depending on the severity of the injury, a player could continue on in a game or be sidelined for months.

Our friends at Ultra Ankle have outlined three steps to effectively recognize, evaluate and treat an ankle injury.

Injury Evaluation

  • This involves determining the severity of the injury. If it is determined that the athlete can potentially still participate in the sporting game, continue onto the next steps. If not, the player needs immediate medical attention.

Stabilize the Ankle

  • This involves stabilizing the ankle joint so that the player won’t incur another injury. If the player is still feeling pain after this method of treatment is applied, then another method of treatment must be performed and medical attention must be sought.

Relieve Weight Bearing Pain

  • In this step, an ankle brace is applied to a player to reduce weight bearing pain. Taping up the ankle will not provide enough support; a brace must be used. If the player continues to express pain, they should not continue in the sporting game and seek medical attention.

An ankle brace has become an essential item for treating ankle injuries. It’s used to unload and ease weight bearing pain to treat and rehabilitate an ankle injury.
