In the Summer, rising temperatures can make even walking a short distance feel exhausting. Almost all activities feel more tiring in the heat which is why it’s important to be mindful of exercising in the Summer. If precautions are not taken to alter your exercise routines to create a safe summer workout, you might end up with an injury.
Consider switching out your usual workout for something less strenuous. Rather than intensive weight training, consider exercises with light kettlebells. While you may be using less weight, slowing down the exercise and holding poses offers a great workout without high intensity.
If it is too hot for your typical run, use an aquatic therapy product for exercise in a pool. Aquatic hand bars paired with ankle cuffs can replicate the benefits of your typical run, with the advantage of keeping cool in the water.
It is still possible to get a great intensive workout in the summer through taking several precautionary measures. Here are our favorite tips for a safe summer workout:
- Dress appropriately: wear something lightweight and breathable. Consider light colors and a hat to protect against the hot sun.
- Keep cool: before a workout, take a cold shower and put your hair up do the cold water drips down on you while you exercise. If you don’t have the time, grab a cold compress for a quick cool down.
- Change it up: check out the weather and decide on your exercise for the day based on the temperature. Go for a swim or a bike ride on super-hot days.
- Find cool places: take a walk on a shady path or by the shore. Be smart about where you exercise, temperatures can be up to 10 degrees hotter on city streets.
- Sit active: switch out your office chair for an inflatable exercise ball to improve posture and make micromovements, resulting in light activity at your desk.
- Split up or shorten it: there’s nothing wrong with coming back to a workout later. 10 minute exercise sessions can be very effective so don’t push yourself if it’s too hot.
- Slow down: if you won’t shorten the length of your workout, tone down the intensity.
- Head inside: go to a gym with AC or work out from the comforts of your home. You can get started with as little as an exercise ball, weights, a resistance band, and access to YouTube for exercise videos.
