Osteoporosis is a disease in which the body either loses too much bone, produces too little bone or both. Bones are living tissues and they age just as our body does. As a result, when bones age they begin to naturally deteriorate becoming weaker and are more susceptible to breakage.

World Osteoporosis Day marks the launching of a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. The campaign urges the general public to take early action to protect their bone and muscle health.

The goal of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) is to promote worldwide awareness of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. They also want to encourage individuals to recognize risk factors such as first fractures, and to seek testing and treatment as a preventative measure.

Osteoporosis can often be confused with Scoliosis. Osteoporosis and scoliosis are related because they are both conditions which affects the spine. The fractures associated with osteoporosis can occur in scoliosis patients on the side of their curves in the spine. If an older patient has osteoporosis of the spine, it can lead to scoliosis. It is common for older patients to experience both conditions.

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that usually occurs during the growth spurt right before puberty. There are many different curves in which the spine can take and symptoms may include uneven shoulders, uneven waist and one hip being higher than the other.

There are many different products used to measure the curve of the spine and determine if a person has scoliosis or is beginning to show symptoms.
