It’s the start of the new year and the most common New Year’s resolution is to go to the gym. Especially after eating a lot of holiday food at the end of last year. Although it is good to make a goal of going to the gym every day, it is important to actually keep that goal. Most people who start the year out trying to get physically fit usually end up quitting before six months. A study found that of those who made goals at the beginning of the year, 37% of people in their 20s and 16% of those over 50 were successful. To help you be successful with your New Year’s fitness goals, below we’ve listed a few helpful tips.
Stretching
This may be a no brainer but what some people don’t realize is that stretching is a necessity before you begin to workout. Stretching keeps you flexible, limber and ready for physical activity. Without stretching, your body will begin to feel tight and stiff. This can leave you more prone to injuries and make pain feel worse. Fitness injuries can be very discouraging and distract you from your New Year’s resolution goal. A good way to stretch is with a CanDo® Foam Roller. This versatile tool allows for multiple stretching exercises. Using a foam roller may be uncomfortable at first, especially when you are very tense, but will feel great over time.
Work Your Way Up
If you haven’t worked out in a while or have never worked out at all, it is good idea to start light and slow. Do not just go for the heavy weights thinking you are Superman. Even the biggest bodybuilders progressively workout, starting off with light weights and working their way up. Also, do not be afraid to take breaks in-between workouts. Pacing yourself and breathing gives you better endurance. People who go all out in the beginning of a workout most likely burnout fast.
Be Realistic
One of the biggest problems with setting a fitness goal is that it may not be realistic enough. It would be a miracle to lose 50 pounds by the end of two months. A more feasible goal would be to lose a couple of pounds every other week or every month. Setting realistic goals will give you a greater chance to meet those goals and more of a sense of accomplishment when you do.
When it comes to making a healthy New Year’s resolution, you should consider stretching, establish realistic fitness goals and progressively working your way up to a more intense workout.
