Not only is October National Chiropractic Month, it is also National Physical Therapy Month! Once a year for the whole month of October, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) seeks to celebrate and raise awareness of the benefits of physical therapy. In addition to this, the APTA is using this month to spread awareness about the opioid crisis and ways Physical Therapy can help.
Physical Therapy is a great non-drug alternative to relieving pain. With opioids being prescribed and misused at alarming rates, physical therapists seek to treat pain with a more interactive approach. Patients seeking physical therapy can reduce body pain and increase body range-of-motion without an addictive effect. Although you could get addicted to hanging out with your physical therapists, it is not life threatening.
The APTA is a professional organization representing more than 100,000-member physical therapists. This organization aims to improve the health and quality of life of individuals in society by advancing physical therapist practice, education, and research. It also strives to increase the awareness and understanding of Physical Therapy’s role in the nation’s health care system. Physical therapists are very knowledgeable and can help with a lot of pain and discomfort patients maybe facing.
Additionally, Physical Therapy can help with stress management and sleep deprivation. Physical therapists also provide patients education on modern pain science of the mechanisms and contributing factors that lead to pain. For an alternative and non-life threating form of pain relief it is good to see a physical therapist.
