The month of May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month! During this month, staying physically active is a goal everyone should have. National Physical Fitness and Sports MonthThe weather is getting warmer, so if you have the ability to be outside while still social distancing, try going for a walk or jog. Regular physical activity is very beneficial for people of all ages and body types. If you’ve spent a lot of time sitting on your couch, now’s the time to get up and do something physically active.

The best part about National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is that you don’t have to be a trained athlete to observe it, anyone can participate! In 1983, the President’s Council on Fitness saw this month as a time to promote healthy lifestyles among all Americans to improve their quality of life. Children and adolescents can improve muscular fitness, bone health, and heart health by participating in physical activities in schools. Adults can lower their risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some types of cancer by going for a run after work. Older adults can lower the risk of falls and improve cognitive function through keeping busy around the house and going for walks outside. This is all in hopes that all Americans would extend this healthy habit to other months and for years to come.

There are a lot of things you can do to celebrate National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Joining a community sports league, playing catch with your kids or even exercising with your Mom on Mother’s Day are all great ideas. If you are still stuck inside, try working out from home or go out for a walk if you can. It is important to try these ideas or seek new ones so you can be one of many who promotes healthy lifestyles and improves quality of life. People who are young, old, athletes and couch potatoes can all benefit from being physically active.

National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is a great time to promote being physically active. Spring is in the air and the weather is getting warmer, which is great for going outside and doing something if you can.
