Did you know that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? During this annual observance, the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition encourages Americans to #MoveinMay. This campaign highlights the importance of staying active through sports and other fitness activities. Specifically, this year’s goal is to promote safe physical activity while continuing to practice social distancing.
In 1983, the President’s Council saw May as a time to promote healthy lifestyles among all Americans to improve their quality of life. For children and adolescents, this meant improving muscular fitness, bone health, and heart health. Meanwhile, for adults this meant lowering the risk of certain diseases and improving cognitive function. The importance of being physically is highlighted by regular physical activity which can be very beneficial for people of all ages and body types. This in hopes that all Americans would extend this healthy habit to other months and years to come.
With the weather getting warmer, there is no excuse to not get some exercise. There are a lot of physical activities you can do to celebrate without having to be a trained athlete. Simply by going outside for a walk or a jog is enough. When it comes to school, there are a lot of activities kids can do either during or after school. Examples could be having a school-wide field day or creating a walk-a-thon, where children raise money and use the funds raised to purchase physical activity equipment. It is important to try these ideas or seek new ones to help promote healthy lifestyles and be safe while doing them.
National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is a great starting point to get people active in the hopes that everyone can remain active for months and years to come. Now is the time to get up off the couch and do some physical activities. Do make sure as you are physically active you also keep in mind social distancing and other safety procedures.
