Occupational Therapy Month 2025

April marks a special time for the occupational therapy community as we celebrate Occupational Therapy Month, a time to honor the impact of this essential healthcare profession. Occupational therapy was first introduced in the early 20th century, initially focused on treating mental health through arts and crafts. After World War I the U.S. government sent occupational therapists to France to help shell shocked soldiers recover and regain function to come back to everyday life. Beginning with simple therapeutic activities have evolved into a healthcare discipline dedicated to empowering individuals to overcome obstacles that prevent them from taking part in daily life activities.

The founding of occupational therapy as a profession is credited to several individuals in the early 20th century. The groundwork began in 1841 when Dorothea Dix, a nurse, teacher, and advocate witnessed the appalling conditions of mentally ill patients housed in prisons. Her advocacy and evidence led to funding for proper mental health hospitals, laying an important foundation for therapeutic care. Year later, George Edward Barton, who personally experienced the healing power of meaningful activity during recovering from an illness became an advocate and is credited with coining the term occupational therapy. Occupational Therapy formal structure took shape through Eleanor Clarke Slagle, who is often referred to as mother of occupational therapy, who established the first professional training programs and developed a structured approach to treatment. William Rush Dunton Jr, referred to as the Father of Occupational Therapy, introduced arts and crafts programs for his patients recognizing the therapeutic value of creative engagement. Together these pioneers transformed how society approached rehabilitation and meatal health treatment.

Today, occupational therapy has expanded far beyond its roots to become a vital part of our healthcare system. Occupational therapists work in hospitals, schools, homes, rehabilitation centers, and community programs helping people of all ages ranging from premature babies to elderly adults. Their holistic approach addresses the whole person, focusing on physical abilities, cognitive function, emotional wellbeing, and social environment that affect a person’s ability to participate in meaningful daily activities. The American Occupational Therapy Association established April as Occupational Therapy Month to create awareness and celebrate the profession’s growing field. As we celebrate Occupational Therapy Month, we honor not only the profession’s history, but the continued evolution and the countless lives transformed through the power of therapeutic occupation.
