Can Climbing Stairs Determine your Heart Health?

Do you know your heart beats about 2.5 billion times over the average person’s lifetime? This one part of your body is vital to your everyday health. If you ever wondered about your heart health, you might be able to determine it without having to go to the doctor. A simple and free test can be done by just climbing a couple flights of stairs.

If you have ever felt exhausted from just walking up some stairs, you might want to see your doctor. Researchers from the University Hospital a Coruña in Spain have found that by going up four flights of stairs you can determine how healthy your heart is. If you can climb four flights of stairs in under a minute you are in good shape, but if it takes you over a minute and half you might want to consult your doctor. This is because climbing stairs is something fairly easy to do cardio wise and can be an accurate indicator of your overall cardiac health. Having difficulty climbing some stairs might reveal some underlying heart health issues.

Climbing stairs should not be your only evaluation for your heart health. While this test can be a good initial indicator that something might be wrong, it should not substitute more comprehensive evaluations. Better heart evaluations that your doctor can do to determine if there is something wrong include EKGs and chest X-rays.

Although there are ways to find out your heart health on your own, your doctor is the best source to tell you how you are doing. If you have any questions about heart health, please contact your doctor.
