Here’s the scenario: you know you have hurt something, the pain won’t go away with rest and, if anything, it’s just getting worse. You go to Physical Therapy and want to do well so you can get back to your normal routine. The problem? You’re trying to get through PT so quickly, you create a new injuries.

We get it, you want to get back to your routine and this injury just isn’t allowing that to happen, but instead of rushing through your recovery, you should take the time to heal and make sure you’re not creating new injuries in the process. Fleet Feet Sports recently identified four of the most common injury prevention mistakes and how to avoid making these mistakes. Their focus is, of course, on running, but these tips are applicable to anyone currently going through PT.

The mistakes:

  1. Putting your limbs through the motions quickly
  2. Stretching too far or too fast and tearing something
  3. Being inconsistent with your PT routine
  4. Blowing off PT and trying to work through your injury

How to correct them:

  1. Putting your limbs through the motions quickly. Work slowly and one limb at a time. Remember: quality counts, not quantity
  2. Stretching too far or too fast and tearing something. When it comes to stretching and rehab, being slow, mindful, and gentle is the way to go
  3. Being inconsistent with your PT routine. You only get the benefits of rehab by consistently and mindfully completing your routines
  4. Blowing off PT and trying to work through your injury. If your pain persists, see your doctor

Remember, there’s no gold medal or first place trophy for completing PT. It’s better to take care of your injury right away and then get back into action.
