Walking is a great way to burn off calories and you can intensify it if it is too simple for you. Burning off that holiday Turkey can be speeded up by adding a little spice to what might otherwise be a boring walk.
Before you go for a walk, it is important to get a good stretch in. Regardless if your walk is intense or not, stretching will help you stay limber and less prone to injury. After you have stretched properly, it is time to go for your walk. To spice up your walk, you want to add milestones. Adding milestones will help break up the monotony of just walking and help improve on the calories burned during the workout. For example, after every mile or half a mile you can do pushups or squats. By adding strength exercises when walking, it allows your body to adapt and get stronger.
Milestones are a great way to add strength into your walk. You can intensify your walk even further by adding weights. Walking mostly demands the use of your lower body. By adding weights, not only are you exercising your lower body, but you are also exercising your upper body as well. If you are just starting out with weights, some light weights will do the trick. Cuff Weights are the best weights for your walk because you can strap them on to your wrists without worrying about them falling off. Choosing from a range of white (0.25 lbs.) through red (2.5 lbs.) will do just fine. Once you have chosen the weight you want to use, pick up a pair of them so you are exercising both sides of your body. These light weights might not seem too challenging, but once you get going you would be surprised how heavy they can feel.
Walking is a great way to improve your cardiovascular endurance and maintain a healthy lifestyle, but for some, walking is too easy or boring. To shake things up, add strength training to help make that walk a lot more desirable.
