Did you know the month of May is National Fitness and Sports Month? To celebrate, we are spreading the word that anyone, if physically able, can benefit from being active. For children, physical activity can improve muscle fitness and heart health. For adults, activity can lower heart disease. Also, for the elderly, physical activity can reduce the risk of falls and improve cognitive skills. With the weather getting warmer it is a great time to get up from your couch, go outside, and be physically active.
Communities, healthcare professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities for everyone to get moving daily. Going for a bike ride after dinner or going for a walk during lunch can improve one’s health overall. Even when the weather isn’t the greatest, physical activity can still be achieved indoors. Lifting CanDo® dumbbells or using the CanDo® pedal exerciser under your desk is a great way to get active when you cannot go outside.
While it is good to be physically active during National Fitness and Sports Month, you should stay physically active during every month. Everyone should have a daily activity in his or her life to promote good health. To achieve this goal, use every opportunity to motivate teachers and faculty to make physical activity a part of every student’s day. Also, you can identify youth leaders in your community who can talk to their peers about the importance of being active.
Raising awareness about the importance of physical activity will benefit everyone in the long run. Physical activity can improve muscular fitness, bone health, and heart health. Spread the word today and get active!
