National Safety Month

Posted on in Industry News, News

Observed annually in June, National Safety Month focuses on reducing the leading causes of injury at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities. Thousands of organizations nationwide participate in this month to bring awareness to safety and help people lead safer lives. Even though June is almost over it is always good to practice safety. Below we’ve outlined three safety tips that you can use to stay safe: practicing emergency preparedness, taking care of yourself, and preventing falls.

Practicing Emergency Preparedness

Being able to prepare during emergency situations is a great way to stay safe. Having an emergency aid kit nearby or making sure fire extinguishers are readily available will make home and work environments a lot safer. Yes, a paper cut might not be life threatening, but it is still good to use the emergency aid kit. These kits can disinfect wounds to prevent infection. Fire extinguishers can also help put out small fires to prevent any fatalities. Also, make sure there are prepared routes and illuminated fire exits in case travesties do occur.

Taking Care of Yourself

Aside for looking out for others, it is also good to look out for yourself. Taking care of yourself should be a top priority to make sure you are well enough for life’s activities. Staying away from people who are sick, going to regular physicals, and exercising are all good ways to stay healthy. As we get older we are more prone to illness and injury, so it is always good to go to the doctor even when you’re not sick. This helps prevent illnesses before they happen. Also, going for a jog or doing balance exercises will increase strength and coordination.

Preventing Falls

As mentioned in our “Importance of Balance Training” article, balance training will help prevent falls. National Safety MonthFalls are a big cause of injuries especially with seniors. Exercising and eating right will help strengthen the body to be able to withstand falls in case they do happen. To lessen the impact of a fall, try adding more padding and hand rails for people who are more prone to falling.
