Preparing for Spring Exercises

Spring is here and you know what that means, getting back into shape for summer! Preparing for Spring ExercisesThe warmer weather is great for going on walks, hikes and other outdoor activities. After coming out of a Winter exercise hibernation, it is good to take some precautions before you get back into exercising. Below are three tips you need to know before getting back into exercising:

Know your limits

For starters, it is important to know your limits. If you are just getting back into exercising after taking the Winter off it is good to start off slow. Like the thawing out of an icicle, you don’t just start running and jumping. You need to build up to what you were used to doing. Trying to run 10 miles the first day after doing little to no activity may do more harm than good. Start your Spring training by walking for 10 minutes every day or every other day for a week, and then the next week, walk for 15 minutes. Gradually build up from five-minute intervals each week to a 30 to 40-minute walk. Doing this will allow you to avoid injury and strain to your body.

Stretch and use Proper Technique

To avoid a potential injury, it is important to stretch and use proper technique while exercising. Without the right exercise program and plenty of preparation, you are at risk for injury. The most common injury seen by medical professionals is muscle soreness. Muscles become sore from doing too much activity in a short period of time. This soreness can be prevented through stretching and planning out exercise activities ahead of time.

Schedule a Yearly Exam

The next thing you need to be aware of as you begin exercising in the Spring is to schedule your yearly medical exam. If you have not done so already this year, get your health checked out by your doctor and tell your doctor you are going to start increasing your activity level. Spring is a great time to get back into shape. Just remember to start off slow, stretch and be sure to get your yearly checkup if you haven’t already.
