Lower back pain can be caused by the strangest things. We asked around our office and found our employees had instances of lower back pain caused by the following:
- Pulling on snow boots
- Picking up a pet cat
- Sitting differently while stuffing envelopes
- Getting out of bed in the morning
Many of us have performed these actions hundreds if not thousands of times. Have you ever wondered why simple actions that we have performed before can turn into back pain triggers? According to a new study published in Arthritis Care and Research, psychological and lifestyle factors play a greater role in lower back pain than most people realize. Dr. Manuela Ferreria, author of the study and associate professor at the George Institute for Global Health at Sydney Medical School in Australia, said that even brief exposure to certain factors can trigger lower back pain, whether you have a history of it or not. She and her team identified the following risks for lower back pain:
- You’re distracted – if you do not pay attention to what you’re doing while exerting yourself, chances are you will do something that is biomechanically not correct. Dr. Ferreria’s research found that distraction during exertion can make you 25 times more likely to trigger a back pain episode.
- You’re tired – when you are fatigued, your muscle tone and core strength may be compromised. Muscles may be slower to adjust to your movement and the lack of muscular support and stability can make your back extra vulnerable.
- It’s early in the day – when we sleep, our spine swells with fluid, which may partially explain why the back is more susceptible to stress and strain in the morning.
- You are not being cautious enough – young adults are often not cautious enough while performing manual labor. This is often because they have a feeling of invincibility. Research found that older adults may be less likely to injure their backs while performing manual labor than young adults because they know their limits and move more carefully.
