If you have used resistive hand putty, you already know that it is a great exerciser to strengthen hand and finger muscles. The amount of exercises you can do is only limited by one’s own imagination. If you are looking for new functional exercises to do with your TheraPutty®, try using Puttycise® Tools.
The Puttycise® family consists of 5 functional tools which all work by inserting the tool base into the exercise putty. Each durable plastic tool is specially designed to aid in performing functional exercises that mimic daily activities. These tools are easy to use and easy to teach as well. Below we’ve briefly described each tool in the collection.
Knob Turn
The Knob Turn Tool is used to simulate the motions of opening a door or tightening a jar. Simply twist this tool clockwise and counter-clockwise in hand putty to perform this exercise. Using this tool can teach using a “C” grip to avoid ulnar stress to MP joints.
L-Bar
The L-Bar Tool is used to mimic the motions of pulling a vacuum back and forth, sweeping a broom or using a hammer. This tool can be pushed into the putty in any direction, moved forwards and backwards, and dragged across the surface of the putty in any direction. Using this tool continuously can teach using a neutral hold technique to avoid ulnar stress to MP joints.
Peg Turn
The Peg Turn Tool can simulate the motions of turning a bolt, pushing a button or picking up a pen. Its base is square and it’s designed to be spun and twisted in resistive putty in whatever direction you desire. Continued use of this tool can teach using an intrinsic hold to decrease ulnar stress to MP joints.
Key Turn
The Key Turn Tool mimics motions that are similar to turning a key into a lock or throwing a Frisbee. Twist and drag this tool through hand putty to perform these functional exercises. Using this tool can teach the use of an intrinsic hold instead of a lateral pinch to decrease repetitive stress to the CMC joint.
Cap Turn
The Cap Turn Tool can simulate the motions of opening a bottle, tightening a bolt or turning on a knob. Use this tool by inserting it into the putty and twisting it from left to right. Continued use of this tool can teach using a “C” grasp instead of a standard grip when opening items like a water bottle. This will avoid stress to MP joints and loading to the CMC joint.
Once hand and finger strength increases by using these functional tools, switch out your TheraPutty® to one of a higher resistance level to progressively exercise. Expand your hand therapy options today with Puttycise® tools!
