Why Good Posture is Important

Do you have good posture? Since grammar school, you were probably told to sit up straight and have good posture. As people grow older that request to stand up tall becomes less and less frequent. Eventually people find themselves in a comfortable slouched position. As it turns out, good posture has more of an impact than some would think.

For reference, good posture is the practice maintaining the neutral spine. With so many muscles that surround the spine, you must use those muscles to balance your spine and support your body equally when either sitting or standing. To practice this, you must make sure that your back is mostly straight, your shoulders are back, and your ears are lined up over your collarbones. You can do this while in a relaxed position without hyperextending any of your joints.

From preventing pain to improving self-confidence, putting the effort in to improve your posture has huge benefits. One benefit to having good posture is reducing back pain. Sitting or standing in a slouched position for prolonged periods of time can put a lot of stress your lower back. This slouched position can also lead to headaches due to increased muscle tension in the back of the neck. Having good posture means fewer headaches as well as better lung capacity and improved circulation and digestion. Besides the medical benefits, good posture can also make you appear taller and have better confidence in yourself.

Good posture is important to maintain and practice because it boosts your energy levels and reduces your pain. Not only that, but it can also boost your confidence and self-esteem. Maybe it was a good idea to listen to your teacher or parent about good posture when you were younger.
